Why enter writing competitions?
It’s one thing to write, and another entirely different proposition getting others to actually read what you have written.
Here is a list of writing competitions, awards, fairs, festivals and other book markets with deadlines in August, 2017.

Literary Prize http://www.aspenwords.org/programs/literary-prize/ August 1, 2017 A prize of $35,000 will be given annually for a book of fiction published in the current year that “illuminates a vital contemporary issue and demonstrates the transformative power of literature on thought and culture.” The winner will also receive an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the 2018 Aspen Words Summer Benefit in Aspen, Colorado, as a featured speaker and guest of honor. Novels, story collections, and translations of books of fiction published by a U.S. publisher in 2017 are eligible. Stephen L. Carter, Jessica Fullerton, Phil Klay, Alondra Nelson, and Akhil Sharma will judge. Publishers may submit the required entry form with a $30 entry fee by August 1, and five copies of a book (or bound galleys) by September 1. There is no entry fee for presses whose annual net sales are less than $4 million. Visit the website for the required entry form and complete guidelines.
Emerging Voices Fellowships https://penusa.org/programs/emerging-voices August 1, 2017 Even-month fellowships, which include a stipend of $1,000 each, are given annually to emerging poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers who lack access to financial and creative support. Each fellow receives professional mentorship with an established writer in Los Angeles, attends courses at the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program, and takes part in public readings and other programming throughout the fellowship period. Travel and lodging are not provided. Writers who do not have significant publication credits, are not enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate writing program, and do not hold an undergraduate or graduate writing degree are eligible. Submit up to 10 pages of poetry or 20 pages of prose, a curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation with a $10 entry fee by August 1. Visit the website for complete guidelines.
Individual Artist Fellowships http://arts.delaware.gov/grants-for-artists/ August 1, 2017 Established Professional Fellowships of $6,000 each and Emerging Artist Fellowships of $3,000 each are given annually to Delaware poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers who have lived in Delaware for at least one year prior to application and who are not enrolled in a degree-granting program. Submit 15 to 20 pages of poetry or prose by August 1. There is no entry fee. Visit the website for the required entry form and complete guidelines.

One entrant will get the opportunity to receive feedback on a piece of creative nonfiction of their choosing. All you have to do is enter the contest by July 15 to be considered!
Costa Short Story Award http://www.costa.co.uk/costa-book-awards/costa-short-story-award/ August 4, 2017 The Costa Short Story Award (the “CSSA”) is for a single, previously-unpublished short story of up to 4,000 words by an author aged 18 years or over on 1 January 2017 whose primary residence (ie resident for over six months of the year) has been in the United Kingdom or Ireland since 1 November 2014. UK or Irish nationality is not a requirement. If there is any issue about whether or not you qualify as a UK resident, please check with the organisers before submitting your entry.
